The Central New York Motivational Interviewing Collaborative (CNY MIC)

The Central New York Motivational Interviewing Collaborative (CNY MIC) is dedicated to supporting individuals and organizations in successfully implementing Motivational Interviewing (MI) with integrity and sustainability. Our services include MI training, coaching, and ongoing guidance for agencies and professionals committed to enhancing their practice of Motivational Interviewing. We provide evidence-based tools and resources to ensure MI sustainability and positive outcomes across various sectors.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) Training Programs:

 Our Foundational MI training is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to Motivational Interviewing. The minimum recommended duration is 10 hours of training, available in various formats: two full-day sessions, four half-day sessions, or five weeks of two-hour sessions. This training covers the essential principles, spirit, processes, and core skills of MI. Participants will explore the evidence base of MI, understand its underlying rationale, and practice applying core skills to real-world scenarios.

Intermediate MI Training:
The Intermediate MI training builds on foundational skills, helping participants develop their competence in Motivational Interviewing. This level deepens understanding of how to apply MI skills in the four key processes: Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning. Focus areas include managing sustain talk, addressing discord, and encouraging change talk to promote client engagement and progress.

Advanced MI Training:
Our Advanced MI training focuses on helping practitioners enhance their confidence and advance their MI skills toward fidelity and integration into routine practice. Participants will focus on applying MI to specific populations, settings, and clinical areas. Training may include case consultation, demonstrations, and individualized feedback to support skillful practice and continuous improvement.

MI Supervisor or Coach Training:
Our MI Supervisor or Coach training is designed to build organizational capacity by training supervisors and staff to facilitate ongoing Motivational Interviewing learning. This training is ideal for clinical supervisors, peer supervisors, mentors, and anyone responsible for supporting staff development. Topics covered include observation methods, assessment of MI practice, delivering supportive feedback, facilitating learning activities, and designing a practice improvement process with outcome monitoring.
